Problem

Sex being taboo in India, the youth face the biggest hurdle of lack of awareness, sensitization and understanding given its lopsided representation in media, social media or porn. This sets unrealistic expectations and a lack of self and social management.

Solution

  • Yuvaa has a presence in 500 colleges across India. Thus, it became easy for the organization to run programs and allied events specific to love and sex education.
  • Yuvaa strongly advocates for love, relationships and sex education as its primary themes. It has partnered with Tinder India; leveraging this partnership would ensure digital safety and healthier dating relationships and foster SEL amongst Indian youth.

My Role

  1. Strategist
I pitched the idea of an educational program to Yuvaa and proposed partnering with Tinder India to further this agenda. The year-long intervention would fit into Tinder India’s on-ground efforts to ensure safety amongst its users. In addition, the intervention spearheaded by Yuvaa would allow a deep understanding of the pulse of Gen-Z audiences.
  2. Curriculum Developer
As a curriculum developer, I focused on four aspects of content that take a holistic approach to dating relationships and self. It began at an individual level focusing on emotional and mental development to realize the bonds with primary caregivers. Love is identified as a social force; hence understanding the gender, caste and class implications becomes necessary. The last module focused on taking action at all three levels.
  3. Learning Designer
To make the learning experience meaningful and impactful, the focus remained on building skills and knowledge among learners. Therefore, each module targeted specific soft skills to increase self-awareness and build social relationships.

The modules consisted of a blend of in-person workshops, videos, and activities as a part of a treasure hunt to make the entire course a playful learning experience.

Key Learnings

  • From an implementation perspective, the uptake in Tier 3 cities became challenging as they needed a higher receptivity. Moreover, taking a more pragmatic approach, converting and facilitating the curriculum in regional languages would offer more affordances while scaling the project.

  • Time is always a constraint while developing a long-term engagement with college students. Thus a more realistic solution has been to create online communities with sex-positive environments and a healthy, safe space for the youth.
  • Currently, this project is being pursued and is in its early stages of execution
